Lower body
Achilles tendon & calf pain
Injury to this system usually occurs in the form of a strain, tear, or repetitive microtrauma to the area over a period of time. Cramps are also a common affliction.
Treatment depends on the severity and nature of the injury but can involve strengthening exercises, underlying cause diagnosis, alignment correction and soft tissue therapy.
Ankle pain
Ankle sprains are extremely common, as are conditions which develop from putting weight on an injury too soon and functional instability affecting both joint and tissue.
Treament of most ankle injuries involve manual therapy to increase movement and strengthen specific muscles.
Foot pain
Foot mechanics are prone to a wide range of conditions, from Plantar Fascilitis (flat fleet) to bunions and joint problems.
Treatment of foot conditions is mainly down to experienced podiatrists, but often requires the involvement of physiotherapists for manual therapy.
Pelvis and lower back pain
About 80-90% of UK adults suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives. Pain is generally mechanical in nature, affecting tissue.
Physiotherapists focus on identifying and treating the underlying cause, be it posture correction or retraining muscles.
Upper body and spine
Headaches
Visiting your GP is the first step for a painful headache, but just relying on medication may mask an underlying, treatable problem. Headaches can be caused by disorders in the lower part of the neck, originating in the spine.
Treatment often involves managing underlying causes of these issues, such as poor sitting posture and work station assessment.
Neck pain
Pain can vary from dull to sharp and is generally due to an irritation of a number of tissues in the region.
Treatment varies, but centres on manual therapy and exercises to loosen joint and tissue restriction.
Shoulder pain
The most common shoulder problems relate either to instability or impingement, from disclocation to tissue irritation.
Muscle strengthening is usually effective for this area.
Wrist and hand injuries
Traumatic injuries are common as we instinctively reach out to break a fall with wrists bent.
Work station assessment, exercises and strengthening techniques all form part of treatment for this type of injury.
